When it comes to earning EV racing notoriety, Toyota is upping its stakes. Specifically, they're putting aside their hybrid 3400cc V8 and supercapacitor energy storage system in favor a car dubbed TMG EV P002, which they plan to take to Pikes Peak on July 8th.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb for readers not familiar with the event is the ultimate stamina challenge. It takes place in Colorado every year. And, every year, automakers from all over the world enter the models they think have more oomph than their competitors.
Enthusiasts will be happy to know the new P002 borrows the original powertrain from the TMG EV P001, which earned a very respectable time at Nurburgring Nordshleife, last year. The main difference is that, this time around, it's fitted to a Radical Sportscars' chassis.
How powerful is the new Toyota-powered race car ?
Let's just say that backed by a top power of 350 kW and max speed of 150 mph, it won't disappoint.
That said; Toyota remains very humble about their EV racing developments. Specifically, they say, "Electric powertrain technology in motorsport is still in its development phase but through projects like this one, TMG is laying the foundations for the future of high-performance and motorsport cars."1
