It's easy to see why the Toyota Mirai handily won the World Car Awards' title of World Green Car for 2016. One of the criteria new cars are judged on is tailpipe emissions, and the Mirai has none.

The only by-product of the chemical process that combines hydrogen and oxygen to create for the Mirai is water.

Hydrogen isn't just an ideal fuel because of its tailpipe emissions. Unlike fossil fuels, which are a non-renewable resource, hydrogen can be obtained sustainably from sources like cow manure and landfill gas.

There's a long process of building up the infrastructure to fuel hydrogen cars, and for fuel companies to develop more eco-friendly practices for creating hydrogen fuel, but the potential is inspiring. We're proud that the World Car Awards chose to highlight hydrogen technology this year.
